We’re Still Waiting is a virtual book discussion series hosted by the Kohl Family YMCA and based on Why We Can’t Wait by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Advance reading of the book is strongly encouraged. Participants may check their local library or purchase the book from Amazon and other booksellers.

This event is free, open to the public, and will take place via Zoom on January 31 – February 21, Mondays only, 11:30 – 12:30 PM. The discussion facilitator is Janet V. Black, Chair of the Christian Emphasis Committee at the Kohl Family Y. The Zoom link will be emailed prior to the first meeting.

In Why We Can’t Wait, Dr. King examines the civil rights movement and the non-violent direct-action campaign in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963. He looks at this pivotal time “tracing the history of the struggle for civil rights back to its beginnings...and looking to the future, assessing the work to be done beyond Birmingham to bring full equality for African-Americans.” Excerpts from the book will drive the discussion throughout the series.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR

 

Janet Black

Janet V. Black is the chair of the Christian Emphasis Committee at the Kohl Family YMCA in Akron. In her role there, Ms. Black develops and supports programs and activities that focus on the Y’s Christian mission.

Beginning her career in juvenile corrections, Ms. Black has over 40 years of experience in human and social services, working primarily for agencies that support the empowerment of girls and women. She has facilitated workshops and been a guest speaker on a range of subjects, including diversity & cultural competence, violence against women, and issues concerning the LGBTQ+ community.

In addition to her volunteer service with the Kohl Family Y, Ms. Black participates in the Neighborhood Network, is a PTA member, a Girl Scout leader, and a long-time member of Emmanuel Fellowship Church in Akron. As part of the church’s Spiritual Leadership Team, Ms. Black manages the prayer chain, periodically preaches sermons, leads the outreach & fellowship ministries, and serves as Chair of the Congregation.

Ms. Black is a mother and grandmother who joyfully lives her blessed life with family and friends.
