Jill Kolesar, President and CEO of Akron Area YMCA, at Riverfront YMCA
Jill Kolesar, President and CEO of the Akron Area YMCA, has announced her plans to retire in June 2026, bringing to a close an inspiring 38-year journey with the Y that began with her service as a volunteer at the Riverfront YMCA in Cuyahoga Falls. Kolesar shared the news with the Y’s more than 800 staff members through her monthly video message, recorded fittingly at Riverfront and distributed on October 28 via email. Since stepping into the role of President and CEO in 2016 — and becoming the first woman to hold that title in the Akron Area YMCA’s 155-year history — Kolesar has led with vision, integrity, and heart. Her path from branch executive to Chief Operating Officer to the Y’s top leadership role has been marked by transformative accomplishments. Under her leadership, the Akron Area YMCA has launched 24/7 operations, weathered the challenges of a pandemic shutdown, and surpassed pre-COVID membership benchmarks across six branches in Summit and Medina counties. Her tenure has also seen significant capital improvements at Camp Y-Noah, enhancements to early care and education centers, and strategic partnerships with key community organizations including Summit County Courts, the City of Akron, Akron Children’s Hospital, and Summa Health. Known for her community spirit, Jill has been a familiar face at YMCA events and a steadfast supporter of initiatives through Leadership Akron, Love Akron, Rotary, and more. Her leadership style — grounded in care and personal connection — is exemplified by handwritten thank-you notes, surprise treats from her kitchen, and an always-open door and listening ear. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Jill cherishes her role as “Gram” to her grandchildren. She looks forward to retirement adventures with her partner Rick, spending time with her three children and their spouses, getting back to pickleball, traveling, gardening, and starting every day with her signature morning run. The Akron Area YMCA Board of Trustees, led by Chairperson Russ Holmes, will begin planning for leadership succession in the coming months, while staff look forward to honoring Jill with a celebration in summer 2026.
