FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Registration for Gymnastics classes, like other Youth Sports, is easy. You can register online by clicking here or by calling or visiting the branch. Registration dates are set up to correlate with the various sessions that Youth Sports are offered.

Scholarships or financial assistance are readily available to family’s seeking a little help in paying for the cost of youth sports. There is a sliding rate scale that is applied and used by all branches to assure that youth programs are affordable to all. Inquire about scholarships or financial assistance at the branch when you register your child for programs. You can also submit an online application for the Riverfront YMCA here.

The Y offers gymnastics classes for children from age 3-17.

Classes are once per week for 45 – 60 minutes (depending on the class).

It’s advisable for gymnasts to wear a leotard (not mandatory), shorts, leggings, tank top, t-shirt, and comfortable athletic wear but not a spandex and sports bra combo. Hair should be pulled back away from the face, with a hair tie, is possible. Gymnasts should not wear socks or dangling jewelry.

At the beginning of each session, the coaches create a testing sheet that gymnasts receive week 6 of each session indicating if they have to retake the class or can progress to the next course level. In order to move up to the next level at the end of each session, the gymnasts will be tested on various skills that they will learn, train, and perfect. As coaches, we teach them not only how to do each skill but how to implement control, confidence, and safety each time they practice that skill. It is not abnormal for students to repeat levels as we work to make sure they are truly ready for the next class.

Team practices are held 2-4 days per week for 1.5-3 hours (depending on the level).

In an average year, the Riverfront Gymnastics Team will compete in 6-8 meets.
